Breath Alcohol Testing Transition Class Information

Breath Alcohol Testing Transition Class

*Registration instructions and class dates now posted below.

Course Information

Effective January 1, 2013, pursuant to GBI Rules 92-3 the Georgia Model Intoxilyzer 9000 is approved for use in the state of Georgia as an evidential breath testing device. As of December 31, 2015, the Intoxilyzer 5000 is no longer be an approved evidential breath testing device in Georgia.  In order to ensure an orderly statewide transition to the Intoxilyzer 9000, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has implemented a phased three year transition plan.  See “Implementation Plan for Replacement of Breath Alcohol Testing Instruments” dated January 2012 located at www.dofs.gbi.georgia.gov/downloads for further details.

In order to use the Intoxilyzer 9000 to conduct evidential breath tests on subjects suspected of DUI, operators must obtain a permit that specifically states that the holder is certified to conduct analyses of breath specimens for alcohol content utilizing the Intoxilyzer 9000.  Note that possessing an Intoxilyzer 5000 permit does not authorize the holder to conduct analyses on the Intoxilyzer 9000. Also note that obtaining an Intoxilyzer 9000 permit does not renew an expired Intoxilyzer 5000 permit.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia State Patrol Implied Consent Unit have developed a four-hour Breath Alcohol Testing Transition Class in order to enable current Intoxilyzer 5000 operators to apply their previous training and experience with the Intoxilyzer 5000 to the proper operation of the Georgia Model Intoxilyzer 9000.  Students who successfully complete the class will be issued a permit authorizing the holder to conduct analyses on the Intoxilyzer 9000.

The Breath Alcohol Testing Transition Class will only be offered to individuals who already possess a Intoxilyzer 5000 permit that has been expired for less than one year.  Individuals whose permit has been expired for more than one year are required to attend the 16 hour Basic class to renew their permit.

The course is only being offered at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) in Forsyth, GA.  Class space is expected to be limited at times, and  preference may be given to students from agencies with confirmed Intoxilyzer 9000 purchase orders or to students who meet a strategic geographic need.
