Operations Support (Main Description)
The Laboratory Support section is the alpha and omega of the Crime Lab. Over 60,000 evidence items are received in Lab Support for all DOFS disciplines. Evidence Receiving Technicians remove evidence from the lockboxes, initiating the laboratory chain of custody for that evidence, and enter information in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). All evidence is barcoded and imaged and all documents are scanned into the LIMS. The evidence is then scanned to a lab technician or scientist or to the Evidence Vault.
Most evidence is entered within 1-3 days of receipt into the lab.
Upon completion of the analysis of the evidence by the scientific staff, the evidence is returned to Lab Support where it is stored until it is returned to the submitting agency by Laboratory Support staff.
In addition, the Lab Support section is responsible for the DOFS lobby receptionist/building security. Visitor badges are assigned by the receptionist, and the security of these badges is the responsibility of the Lab Support section.
DOFS pool vehicles are also handled in Lab Support. All Headquarters laboratory staff traveling to training or court or on other laboratory business are required to check out vehicles through Lab Support. The vehicles are maintained by Lab Support and the security of the vehicles, keys, and gas cards is the responsibility of this section.
